John Goodman Slams Pre-Launch Reviews for “Killing” Tom Cruise’s Digger Before Opening Weekend

Even Hollywood’s biggest headliners aren’t immune to getting hit with brutal pre-launch press. Tom Cruise’s latest satire project, Digger, has officially gone down as one of 2026’s most expensive box-office misfires. Produced on a reported budget between $125 million and $180 million, the film stalled out at just $49 million globally—guaranteeing massive losses in theaters that physical media and VOD sales won’t come close to recovering.

Now, co-star John Goodman is speaking out, arguing that harsh critic reviews and doom-and-gloom tracking headlines essentially review-bombed the movie before audiences even had a chance to buy a ticket.

“Killed in the Crib” Before Launch

Speaking with Josh Horowitz, Goodman pushed back against the early critical narrative that defined the film’s launch cycle. Sitting at a middling 53% Rotten Tomatoes score—Cruise’s lowest critical consensus since 2017’s The Mummy—Digger faced steep uphill momentum from the jump:

“It hurts. Before opening, they killed us in the crib with headlines like ‘this is going to make five dollars,’” Goodman said. “It felt like an excuse for people to stay away. I’m proud of it, and I had a blast making it.”

Goodman stood firmly behind the satirical eco-comedy and its message, despite the mixed reception. In their 6/10 review, IGN noted that while the satire lacks the bite needed to drive home its commentary on climate change, the humor and chemistry between Cruise and Goodman make it worth a watch for theater subscription holders.

The Reality Check: Can It Cult-Classic Its Way Out?

In the gaming world, we see titles launch to mixed reviews, get written off on day one, and later find a dedicated cult audience through patches or word-of-mouth. Hollywood works similarly, but without the benefit of a “Day 1 fix.”

  • The Financial Crater: Grossing under $50 million against a $150M+ budget means the production is deep in the red.
  • The Star Power Test: Even Tom Cruise’s near-flawless box-office armor has limits when high-concept satire clashes with lukewarm early buzz.
  • Long-Term Legacy: While Digger may eventually earn a streaming reappraisal down the road, its theatrical run is dead in the water.

Whether this rare misstep will steer Cruise away from experimental comedies back to safe franchise blockbusters remains to be seen, but the cast is clearly standing by their work.
